Bernath, 34, from south St. Louis, and White, 37, from Crystal City, were the overall and female winners, respectively, in Sunday’s Schell Shocked Challenge 5K run at West City Park in Festus. Bernath, who started running a year ago to improve his health, finished far ahead of the rest of the field in 18:16. He works for the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier and puts in about 35-40 miles of walking a week on his job, plus 20-25 miles a week of running. “I saw that four-foot trophy and that got me motivated,” he said after the race. White, a 1994 graduate of Crystal City High School, started running three years ago; she works at the Verallia bottle plant in Pevely. Her winning time of 23:15 was a personal best for a 5K.
