Good News: De Soto Junior High honored for having ‘CharacterPlus’

De Soto Junior High School recently was chosen as a winning school in the “Champions for Character: Celebrating Service Learning” recognition program sponsored by Cardinals Care and CharacterPlus. The award focused on student service learning. Service learning projects are integrated into the school curriculum and school culture. For instance, students in Communications Arts and computer classes wrote and designed thank you letters and cards to building support staff, local law enforcement and emergency personnel, and the military. Also, art students created a large thank-you card for the Union Pacific railroad, which sponsored the school in the CharacterPlus program, that included photos of student sculptures and artwork. The school received a banner presented at an assembly that featured St. Louis Cardinal mascot Fredbird and students and staff involved were recognized at the Cardinals’

    Good News: De Soto Doves Bible Quiz team advances to nationals

    The De Soto Doves Junior Bible Quiz team, representing the First Assembly of God Church in De Soto, earned honors at sectional, district and regional competitions and has qualified to compete at the national competition June 6-8 in Cedar Hill, Texas.

    The church has two teams – A Team and C Team. Both teams placed first in sectional competition. From the A Team, Marc Grogan took first-place honors and Sophie Lawson placed 10th.

    Good news: Twin City Area Optimist Club honors local students

    As part of its Youth Appreciation Project, members of the Twin City Area Optimist Club recently honored seven students for their accomplishments.

    Good news: 89 compete in De Soto Better Body Challenge; 4 winners lose combined 173 pounds

    Eighty-nine people competed in Get Healthy De Soto’s 2013 Better Body Challenge. Winners received their prizes last night (May 2). They are: Ron Sutton (first-place male) – 76-pound weight loss (22.04 percent of his total body weight). Sutton won $445; Tracey Sawdy (first-place female) – 48.2-pound weight loss (21.01 percent) – $445; Randy Davis (second-place male) – 22.6-pound weight loss (10.38 percent) – $130 and two gift certificates; and Wendi Turner – 26-pound weight loss (13.42 percent) – $130 and two gift certificates.

    GOOD NEWS: Imperial man wins $55,071 on Lottery ticket

    Leo Bell of Imperial bought a $6 Missouri Lottery “Club Keno” ticket and won $55,071 on a progressive eight-spot ticket.

    Bell, 51, is kitchen manager at Weber’s Front Row, 3930 Vogel Road, in Arnold. He bought the ticket there following a 12-hour shift in the kitchen.

    Brenden McKeon, a senior at De Soto High School, was recognized by the De Soto Board of Education at its meeting Tuesday (April 16) for his selection to the Missouri Scholars 100, a statewide program that honors the state’s top 100 scholars.

    Good News: C.A.T.S. take Chicago by storm

    Seventh- and eighth-grade students from Michelle Storment’s C.A.T.S. gifted education class at Senn-Thomas Middle School recently traveled to Chicago to participate in the 20th annual Future City Regional Competition. Part of National Engineers Week, the competition introduces students to engineering with the popular SimCity software.     The Knights of Columbus Council 14402 at Our Lady Catholic School in Festus recently announced the winners for its Substance Abuse and Awareness Poster contest. The winners were Paige Drinen of Barnhart (8-to-11-year-old drug category), Breanna Boone of Herculaneum (8-11 alcohol category) and Samantha Goodwin of Crystal City (12-14 alcohol category).
