Election aftermath: Four issues win, three lose

Four tax propositions passed and three were defeated in final, unofficial balloting in the Tuesday (April 2) election.

The winning issues:

■ A $10 million bond issue to improve firehouses, restructure debt and make other improvements was approved by voters in the Rock Community Fire Protection District.

■ In Pevely, an increase to the city’s business license fee gained favor, as did a hotel-motel tax.

■ Voters in the Northwest R-1 School District made permanent a Proposition C rollback waiver that was due to expire in 2015.

    Disqualifications eliminate races in Arnold, Pevely, North Jefferson Ambulance

    Several candidates across the county have been removed from the April 2 ballot for failing to pay taxes or municipal services fees by Jan. 15, the day filings for the election closed.

    Two candidates who filed for seats on the Arnold City Council were disqualified, eliminating races in wards 1 and 3. A candidate for the Pevely Board of Aldermen also was disqualified, as well as a candidate for North Jefferson Ambulance District.

    Moss drops out of Arnold mayoral race

    Arnold will have just a two-way mayoral race on April 2, between Ward 1 Councilwoman Doris Borgelt and incumbent Ron Counts, after Ward 4 Councilman Ken Moss withdrew his name Tuesday, right before filings for the election closed.

    County voters turn out in force, turn out longtime officeholder

    Jefferson County voters filled polling places on Tuesday, with a 66.5 percent voter turnout. After all the votes were counted, 98,470 of 148,086 registered voters showed up to cast ballots on county, state and national candidates.

    Voters unseated a 14-year county officeholder, Public Administrator Bruce King in favor of Steve Farmer, and presented several razor-thin margins for seats in the state Legislature.
