Herculaneum girls finish second at state Class 2 track meet

The Herculaneum High School girls track team finished second in Class 2 at the state small-school track championships on Saturday (May 18) at Lincoln University in Jefferson City. The Black Cats compiled 47 points, trailing champion Lutheran-St. Peters by 17 points. Ashley Gross won the triple jump in a personal-best 35-8 on her last attempt to highlight Saturday’s individual performances, which included a second-place finish for Kaitlyn Fischer in the 1,600-meter run. Her loss to Courtney Rogers of Lutheran-St. Peters prevented Fischer from completing a four-year sweep of the metric mile and two-mile (3,200 meters) in track, after she won the 3,200 on Friday for her eighth career individual championship (seven in track and one in cross country).

    St. Pius overcame an early 3-0 deficit to edge Herculaneum 6-5 in the championship game of the Class 3 District 3 baseball tournament on Wednesday (May 15) at Leadwood. Herculaneum took a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run double by Austin Adams and Michel Hartmann’s run-scoring single.     Hillsboro wins first-ever district title in girls soccer

    The Hillsboro girls soccer team defeated Windsor 1-0 on Wednesday (May 15) to win the Class 2 District 2 championship at Hillsboro. It’s the first district title ever for the Hawks’ girls team and only the second soccer district crown in school history, following the boys’ win in 2010. Junior Kirsten Settle knocked in the winning goal on a head ball with 7:40 left in regulation.

    St. Pius beats Saxony Lutheran in second overtime to win district soccer crown

    The St. Pius girls soccer team, shaking off injuries and illnesses that have beset several players, outlasted Saxony Lutheran 1-0 in double overtime to win the Class 1 District 1 championship on Tuesday (May 14) at St. Pius. The winning goal came on a shot by Alex Ottoline that deflected off a Saxony defender and into the goal with 6:58 left in the second overtime.

    Seckman wins district baseball crown

    The top-seeded Seckman Jaguars defeated Jackson 8-3 on Monday (May 13) to win the championship of the Class 5 District 1 baseball tournament at Hillsboro. Jaguar power hitter Brady Politte blasted a two-run home run in the third inning to give Seckman a 3-1 lead and the Jaguars rolled from there in turning back the second-seeded Indians. It’s the second district baseball title in Seckman school history; the Jaguars also won in 2006.

    Athlete of the Week (May 12, 2013) – Collin Edwards, Seckman baseball

    One of seven seniors on the Jaguars’ roster, Edwards collected seven hits in 16 at-bats and had four stolen bases to help Seckman win four games last week, three of them over teams with winning records – Jackson, DeSmet and Festus. In Saturday’s Class 5 District 1 semifinal game against Cape Girardeau Central, Edwards blasted a three-run homer to break the game open and also hit a double in the 10-4 victory.     Dragons blank St. Pius in regular-season finale

    Despite getting only four hits, De Soto cruised past St. Pius 7-0 on Thursday (May 9) in the final regular-season game of 2013 for both teams. The host Dragons went ahead 6-0 in the first inning as the beneficiaries of five walks handed out by Lancer starter and losing pitcher Brad Coleman. Two runs scored on an infield error and another two came home on a double by De Soto first baseman Dominic Bays.

    Lancers lose in overtime in showdown game at Saxony Lutheran

    The St. Pius girls soccer team lost 2-1 to Saxony Lutheran in overtime on Wednesday (May 8) at Jackson in a showdown of the two highest-ranked teams in Class 1 in Missouri. The loss snapped a 13-game winning streak for the Lancers (18-3), who had allowed only two goals in that streak. The Crusaders, No. 1 in the state coaches’ poll, improved to 19-1.

    The sophomore pitcher-first baseman, a Fox High graduate, was named the college’s 2012-2013 scholar athlete of the year last week. With her final grade-point average of 3.91, she was one of two Viking athletes to earn the NJCAA Award for Superior Academic Achievement this year, joining Abby Landewee of the Jefferson volleyball team.     Mayes named new boys basketball head coach at St. Pius

    St. Pius High School has named Brandon Mayes as the new head coach of the Lancer boys basketball team. He succeeds Aaron Portell, who had served as head coach since 2007.

    The St. Pius girls soccer team scored three goals in the first 19 minutes of the game and rolled to a 6-0 victory at home over Perryville on Monday (April 29). Those first three tallies all came from Haylee Eastridge, and Caroline Basler added one goal late in the first half and another on a head ball early in the second.     The Jefferson College softball team closed out its regular season on Monday (April 22) with back-to-back shutouts of Lindenwood-Belleville, 7-0 and 12-0, at Hillsboro. In the first game, Viking ace Megan Gurski (22-2) pitched a no-hitter, striking out 12 in seven innings, and nearly made it a perfect game, issuing only one walk.     The Northwest boys have won or tied for first in four invitational meets so far this season and Bono is a big reason why. At Friday’s De Soto Invitational, the senior speedster won the 110 hurdles (15.97) and 300 hurdles (42.60) and anchored the Lions’ winning foursomes in the 4×100 (44.41) and 4×200 (1:33.37) relays. Better known as one of the best soccer players in Northwest history, Bono has lost only once this season in the 300 hurdles.

    The Seckman volleyball team lost a hard-fought match against Rockwood Summit 25-22, 19-25, 23-25 on Thursday (April 18) at Seckman.     The junior infielder helped lead the Blue Jays to four straight wins last week, including the championship of the Saxony Lutheran Tournament. He drove in 10 runs on seven hits in 13 at bats, walked four times and stole four bases. He also hit the first home run by a Jefferson player this season.     Vikings sweep Crowder, extend win streak to a record 22

    The Jefferson College softball team defeated Crowder College, a tough rival in NJCAA Region 16, 8-4 and 5-4 on Friday (April 5) at Hillsboro, extending the team’s winning streak to a program-record 22 games. Jefferson’s ace sophomore pitcher, Megan Gurski, earned the win in each game to run her record to 15-1. She also had two hits and drove in four runs in the first game and added two RBIs, one on a solo home run, in the second contest.

    Boys high school basketball all-star game set for April 12

    Jefferson College, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, will be the site for a boys high school basketball all-star game at 6 p.m. Friday, April 12, in the field house. The game will pit the Jefferson County all-stars, all seniors, against a team of St. Louis city and county senior all-stars. Admission will be $3 for adults and $1 for students.

    The St. Pius girls soccer team had three games postponed last week (March 25-28) because of the record snowfall on March 24-25 and had not played a game since beating Notre Dame of Cape Girardeau 3-2 back on March 18. But the Lancers appeared none the worse for the layoff as they shut out Gibault (Ill.) 4-0 on Monday (April 1) at St. Pius.

    Athlete of the Week (March 31, 2013) – Kayla Dye, Windsor girls soccer

    Dye, a junior forward, led the Owls to wins over Fredericktown (4-0) and Bayless (10-0) last week with a hat trick (three goals) in each game, plus two assists against Bayless. In three games, all Windsor victories, Dye has scored 10 goals, among the leaders in the St. Louis metro area. She led the Owls with 21 goals and five assists as a sophomore last year. Windsor hosts an eight-team tournament this week (April 1-4) that includes De Soto, Festus, Farmington, Pacific, Seckman, Union and Washington.

    The Jefferson College baseball team improved to 16-8 with a four-game sweep of St. Charles Community College on March 22-23. The Vikings were coming off a visit to Delgado Community College in New Orleans in which the Dophins, ranked No. 8 in the latest NJCAA national poll, swept a three-game series by scores of 9-1, 11-1 and 8-2.

    Blue Jays’ Gray and Dreyer get top honors in JCAA small-school girls all-conference basketball selections

    Brooke Gray of Jefferson, who averaged 13.5 points per game in helping lead the Blue Jays to the 2012-2013 Jefferson County Activities Association (JCAA) small-school girls basketball conference title in their first year in the conference, was named the player of the year by the conference coaches. The coaches also named Jefferson head coach Jason Dreyer as coach of the year. Dreyer has since left that post to become the Blue Jays’ athletic director starting in the 2013-2014 school year.
