Athlete of the Week (June 16, 2013) – Brady Womacks, Festus American Legion baseball

In his second pitching start of the season, the tall right-hander dominated the House Springs Legion club in a 13-1 Festus win on June 11 at West City Park in Festus. Womacks allowed only one hit over seven innings and struck out 10. In his two starts so far, he has fanned 20 in 13 innings and allowed only one earned run on five hits. He’s also contributing at the plate with a .368 batting average and three runs batted in. (Matt O’Harver photo.)

    House Springs falls at Jackson in Legion contest

    The House Springs American Legion Post 783 AAA (senior) baseball team traveled to Jackson on Wednesday (June 12) and were beaten by the host ballclub 12-3. House Springs got an early 2-0 lead but it didn’t last long as Jackson responded with six runs in the second inning and held Post 783 to only one more run the rest of the night. Jake Moore and Austin Gotway combined for all seven of House Springs’ hits. Starting pitcher Ryan Brewer took the loss, going five innings. He was relieved

    Barnstormers storm back from early deficit but fall one run short

    The Jefferson County Barnstormers fell behind 11-0 by the top of the fourth inning to the Southside Dirtbags on Wednesday (June 12) and looked hopelessly out of it in the St. Louis Amateur Baseball Association (SLABA) contest at Jefferson High School. The Barnstormers clawed back into the game, however, with five runs in the bottom of the fourth and five more in the fifth to close the gap to 11-10. But their bats were quiet from that point and the Dirtbags held on for an 11-10 win.

    USATF track meet is Sunday at Festus

    The 2013 USATF Masters Association Championship and Open Track & Field Invitational is set for Sunday, June 16 at the Festus High School track. The meet is open to Open division (age 19 or older) and Masters division (age 30 or older) athletes who are members of the USA Track Federation (USATF). Fees are $15 per athlete.     With 75 percent (or more) of the 2013 season still to play, the House Springs American Legion Post 783 senior baseball team still has a lot to prove.

    After starting the season 0-2, House Springs reeled off six straight wins, including District 13 victories over Ste. Genevieve (7-2), Festus (2-1) and De Soto (9-6), and Murphy was the single biggest reason for the surge. Against Festus, he was three-for-four and drove in both House Springs runs; he also was the winning pitcher, scattering six hits over nine innings and striking out 10.     Festus Legion gets first win of season

    The Festus American Legion Post 253 senior (AAA) baseball club earned its first win of the 2013 season on Monday (June 3), downing Post 611 of Ballwin 6-1 at West City Park in Festus. Left-hander Stephen Moss, making his first pitching start for Festus, tossed a complete game, allowing only two hits and one hit batsman over nine innings.     Although they fell short of their goal of repeating as Class 1 state champions on Saturday (June 1), losing to Duchesne 4-0 in the Class 1 title game, the Lancers nonetheless had an outstanding season with a final record of 23-4. Of those 23 victories, 18 were shutouts, including the team’s last 10 wins.     Lancers fall to Duchesne in state soccer title game

    St. Pius lost to Duchesne 4-0 in the championship game for Class 1 at the state high school girls soccer championships on Saturday (June 1) at Blue Springs South High School in Blue Springs.     Lancers advance to state championship game with win in semifinals

    Senior forward Ashley Marks scored a goal in each half and St. Pius once again played airtight defense in defeating Springfield Catholic 4-0 Friday (May 31) in the semifinals of the Class 1 girls state soccer tournament in Blue Springs.

    Kirsten Nulsen and Haylee Eastridge also scored for the Lancers, who improved to 23-3 and advanced to the championship game, to be played at noon on Saturday (June 1) at Blue Springs South High School.

    De Soto to hold girls basketball camp June 3-6

    The De Soto High School girls basketball coaching staff will lead a camp for younger girls from Monday, June 3 through Thursday, June 6 at the high school field house.     Athlete of the Week (May 26, 2013) – Kendra Perren, De Soto track

    After losing in a photo-finish in the Class 3 100-meter hurdles a year ago at the state high school track championships, Perren left no doubt this year, winning the event going away on Saturday (May 25) in 14.67 seconds. She also finished second in the 300 hurdles in 44.27, breaking her own school record in that event, and anchored De Soto’s fourth-place 4×200-meter relay.     St. Pius lost 3-0 to New Madrid County Central on Thursday (May 23) in the high school baseball Class 3 quarterfinals at New Madrid.     St. Pius advances, Hillsboro does not in state soccer playoffs

    St. Pius, continuing the defense of its state high school Class 1 soccer championship from 2012, took another step on Tuesday (May 21) with a 3-0 shutout of Notre Dame-St. Louis in the Class 1 sectional round. The Lancers (21-3) will host a quarterfinal match at 2 p.m. Saturday against John F. Kennedy (15-7), which beat John Burroughs 5-2 in its sectional game. The winner will advance to the state final four on Friday, May 31 at Blue Springs South High School in Blue Springs.

    Postseason ends abruptly for both Jaguar teams

    Seckman High School hosted a doubleheader of state sectional playoff contests on Tuesday (May 21) and the Jaguars ended up on the short end of both. The baseball team, hoping to reach the state quarterfinals for the first time in school history, was denied in a 6-1 loss to Vianney. The Griffins scored all their runs in the first three innings and held Seckman in check as the Jaguars managed only five hits. Seckman finished with a record of 19-8.

    Athlete of the Week (May 19, 2013) – Ashley Gross, Herculaneum track

    The Black Cat junior leaped a personal-best 35 feet, eight inches on her last attempt to win the girls triple jump title at the Class 2 state track and field championships on Saturday at Jefferson City. That accounted for 10 of Herculanuem’s total of 47 points, good enough for second place in the team competition. Herky’s only other individual-event champion was senior Kaitlyn Fischer in the 3,200. Gross, who has been competing in the “triple” since the seventh grade, beat her previous best by eight inches.

    Herculaneum girls finish second at state Class 2 track meet

    The Herculaneum High School girls track team finished second in Class 2 at the state small-school track championships on Saturday (May 18) at Lincoln University in Jefferson City. The Black Cats compiled 47 points, trailing champion Lutheran-St. Peters by 17 points.
