Update: Pilot in crash remains in serious condition; his son now listed as critical

The two Festus men involved in an airplane crash on Monday (June 11) south of Festus remained hospitalized today (June 13).

A spokeswoman for Mercy Hospital St. Louis in Creve Coeur said the pilot of the Thorp T211 single-engine plane, Jim Smith, 65, remained in serious condition while the condition of his son, Kristopher Smith, 40, has been changed from satisfactory to critical.

Kris Smith’s wife, Tracie, said yesterday that both men have had back surgery and that her husband was scheduled to have ankle surgery on Friday.

    Three injured in Doe Run acid leak

    Three employees were injured this morning (June 11) in a sulfuric acid leak at the Doe Run Co. smelter in Herculaneum, one seriously enough to be transported by helicopter for medical care.

    The leak occurred in the acid storage line at the plant, authorities reported.

    Festus father, son injured in plane crash south of Festus

    Jim Smith and his son, Kristopher Smith, both of Festus, were injured tonight (June 10) when their experimental aircraft crashed about two miles south of the Festus Airport in a field near 2627 Plattin Road.

    At 10:15 p.m., Jim Smith, 65, had been transported by helicopter to Mercy Hospital St. Louis in Creve Coeur. Kristopher Smith, 40, also was extricated from the airplane. He, too, was taken to the hospital by helicopter.

    Authorities found the boat of a De Soto man missing since May 31, but the man has not yet been located as of today (June 10).

    Fire hydrant stolen from Arnold yard; cost to replace it estimated at $2,000

    A fire hydrant recently was stolen from a yard in the 1100 block of Telegraph Road in Arnold, Arnold Police report.

    The hydrant belonged to Public Water Supply District No. 1, which serves customers in Arnold.

    It will cost about $2,000 to replace it, said Dan Simpson, the water district manager.

    He said the district owns and maintains about 1,000 fire hydrants.

    De Soto crash leads to DWI arrest of man with 3 times blood-alcohol level

    A one-vehicle crash at 2:50 a.m. May 25 on Vineland School Road in De Soto led to the driver’s arrest on suspicion of drunk driving.

    The suspect, a 22-year-old De Soto man, drove a 1993 Buick Century into a utility pole. Police responded, arrested the man and later learned the driver’s blood-alcohol content was three times the legal limit of .08, De Soto Police Capt. Dan Contarini said.

    Motorcyclist, 64, injured in wreck on Saturday
